We have put together our top 5 DIY Christmas crafts and DIY Christmas decor ideas that are beautiful and easy to make.
Clay Homemade Ornaments
Making pressed clay ornaments to hang on your Christmas tree is a lovely activity the whole family can get involved with. They can be reused over and over again, especially if you glaze the finished design with paint or glue. The design options are endless, but if you have a garden, simply take some cuttings and press them into your rolled clay to create an effective tree ornament. If you want a splash of colour, use some acrylic paint to enhance your design.
What you need:
- Air drying clay
- Straw for string hole
- Cuttings from a plant to make impressions
- Cookie cutters
Homemade Christmas Wreath
Wreaths or garlands can be very expensive to buy, but they add a special touch to your front door, internal doors, or above your fireplace. You can easily make your own in under 1/3 of the cost of a bought wreath. The best place to start is your base or frame, you can either purchase these or make your own with Cedar, willow, dogwood, poplar, and birch. Using florist wire simply attached your favorite greenery as a base then attach your feature pieces such as pine cones, dried orange slices, string lights, or candy canes. Finish by attaching a festive ribbon to hang your wreath.
Yarn Decorations
If you are into DIY or arts & crafts it’s likely you will have some form of yarn or string lying around the house. There are many types of decorations you can achieve with this simple material, from mini woven star ornaments to larger mantelpiece features. All you need to create these is cardboard boxes to create your template(why not use an old cereal box) and glue or tape. Simply create the shape you desire using the cardboard then fasten your string and begin to wrap your shape. Finally, attach a top loop for hanging on the tree.
Handmade Stockings
It doesn’t feel like Christmas until the stockings are hanging on the fireplace or staircase. Handmaking your own stockings is easy and can make gifts that your friends and family keep forever. You can make these out of old clothes or old pillowcases with ribbons or embroidery to add a special touch. Simply cut a large stocking shape template using an old cereal box to make sure all your material is the same size. If you don’t have a sewing machine, hand sew around the outside leaving the top of the stocking open. Invert your stocking so your seams are on the inside. To finish, add a decorative ribbon or embroidery to finish your stocking.
Decorated Mason Jars
Most of us have empty jars in our cupboards, it’s time to make use of these. Making a festive mason jar is a great way to enhance your home ambiance.
What you need:
- Mason jars (no lid required)
- Stone effect spray paint or glitter & epsom salts
- Masking tape
- Ribbon or string
- Greenery & pine cones(optional)
- Tea lights
Begin by cutting your chosen shape out of your masking tape and placing it on your mason jar. Lay newspapers down to protect your floor or surfaces and evenly spay your jar, or press your glitter and epson salts. Wait until dry, and then peel your masking tape to reveal your patterns. Wrap your ribbon or string around the top of your jar incorporating your foliage if you wish. Finally, add your tea light and place them in the desired location. These are a great addition for mantle pieces, Christmas dinner table arrangements and window displays.
