We are delighted to collaborate with the talented local artist, Camilla Clark, to launch a range of splashbacks using her captivating coastal-inspired paintings. The Cornish and Devonshire coastline has been an inspiration on Camilla’s journey as an artist, with many hours spent perfecting her paintings with a mix of oils and beeswax to create rich quality and translucency that enhances the use of subtle yet rich colours. Learn the processes and inspiration behind Camilla’s captivating creations and discover the splashback she created and now has in her award-winning home in Dartmouth.
Get to know Camilla
Her love of art started whilst studying for a degree in Art and Architecture at Canterbury University which led to a career in commercial interior design. During the years of bringing up two daughters, she became a passionate painter and combines all her experience of art history, design and colour to capture the ever-changing landscape. Cornwall has also been a special place on her journey as an artist with many happy hours spent sketching and painting along the beautiful coastline.
She paints in oils, acrylic, watercolour and often uses beeswax mixed with the oil paint to create a rich quality and translucency that enhances the use of both subtle and bright colours. The use of multiple layers allows her to create interest and atmosphere with a glorious mix of colour and texture. She loves the diversity and challenge of creating both figurative and more abstract work. She has been featured in The Artist magazine and is represented by the Create gallery Cornwall where she is one of their best selling artists.
Materials
Camilla uses a variety of mediums to create her emotive paintings included oils, pencils, watercolours, acrylics and organic materials such as plants and beeswax. The layered expressiveness of her technique brings the paintings to life with an emotive quality.
A Personal Touch
We were first captivated by Camilla’s work when she came to us as a customer looking to turn one of her special paintings into a splashback. We were captivated by her creation and wanted to share her experience with our customers. Camilla writes “During the building of a new house in Devon, I decided I wanted a reminder of my garden at our previous house within the new house itself. So many of the plants and shrubs held special memories but couldn’t be transplanted so with that in mind, I decided to design a kitchen splashback.
I used a cotton canvas material to tightly wrap, roll and tie a selection of leaves and flowers collected from the garden including some from a flowering cherry that I had planted in memory of my sister. The rolled fabric was then soaked in an iron mordant (fixer) and later boiled for a couple of hours. The cooled fabric showed soft traces of all the leaves etc, but I then added some painterly marks with inks and pastels to create an original artwork that could then be transformed into a wonderful splashback full of memories.
I couldn’t have done it without Custom Splashbacks who from the first phone call to the delivery of the piece, were helpful, knowledgeable and a delight to deal with. The wonderful splashback now sits in my kitchen as a fabulous reminder of my garden and my sister”.
The house has now won an architectural award and featured in Coast magazine with the splashback taking pride of place in the kitchen.
